Cathy Horyn just posted a photo of Karl Lagerfeld as a child:

Certain details have stayed with him: note the crisp, tall collar.  And I can tell this boy is not a stranger to humor.

It all starts early.

Also, in Lagerfeld Confidential, he’s got a great answer to the question, “did you idealize your mother?”  Something to the effect of “No.  She was perfect.”  I guess she’s responsible for at least part of the perfection we see here.
