I so love “Airport Surroundings”, the latest from Sweden’s Loney Dear.  It’s urgent, simple, catchy pop, yet it doesn’t sound like songs I write (melody/structure wise — of course the production/voice qualities are diff).  It really makes me feel like writing a bunch of new new songs and pushing it all forward.  I’m very happy.

This song reminds me of Split Enz, Neil Finn’s first band.  Their “Hard Act to Follow” sounds closest to “Airport Surroundings,” to me anyway, so I’m including it for you to compare.  I told my brother, and he came up with another reference — Warren G’s “Regulate.”  At around 30 seconds into “Regulate,” you can def hear a melody similar to the verses of “Airport Surroundings.”  Fun.

Love is in the air!*  Also, Valentine’s Day is coming up.  Why let cupid have all the fun hurling sharp objects at people?  Just download, print, and fold these paper plane valentines to take aim.

Very exciting!  My dear, talented friend Jonna Lee released a new video for her fun fun single “My High.”  With its upbeat danceability and the addition of some fuzzy distortion to her clear, warm voice, the song marks a looser, more raw direction.  You can see loads of looser, more raw dancing in the video courtesy of Ms. Lee and a cast of equally stylish Swedes.

I love that I’m not really a “”"writer/critic”"” and can just post about my friends.  Also convenient to have talented friends, not that I have a monopoly on that by any means.

Alexander Girard is easily one of my fav midcentury designers.  His work brings together nature and whimsy in a clean, modern aesthetic, and I always wondered if he inspired the ride It’s a Small World in Disneyland — the façade at least.  If you recall the Braniff International font, logo, & creative direction, you’re already familiar with his work.

House Industries has been selling Girard fonts, and Máximo has been selling his housewares.  Now House sells a selection of Girard toys: a puzzle, blocks, a memory game, and dolls.  (There’s also a nativity scene, but I dunno if that’s classified as a toy).

My dear friend Danielle Parsons directed a super fun video for LA band Puppies and Kittens.  The video, “Dr. Heartstring” AKA “Spies Like Us,” is about love and photosynthesis.  It’s full of stop motion animation, handmade animation, and bits of vintage educational science films.  So good!
