Play with Karl

By Roni Brunn | March 19, 2009 | News

Back in 07, K Karl Lagerfeld put out a tank top bearing his likeness.  In 08, he reprised the motif on a T-shirt sold to benefit Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund.  People kinda took him seriously and designed lots of other items with Lagerfeld images.

So he got sick of himself in a manner only Karl could, and one result of this ennui is a stream of humorous Lagerfeld items.  We start with the SS09 Karl Lagerfeld mask bag:

The Soundtrack of Our Lives live in Beverly Hills

By Roni Brunn | March 18, 2009 | Music downloads, News

tsol-1Last night, The Soundtrack of Our Lives played a small acoustic gig at the Swedish Consulate house.  Clear, star-dappled skies and sprawling canyons set the backdrop for the small stage in the back yard.  The predominantly Swedish audience was proper yet definitely enthused for the music.  The band sounded great, of course, playing a great selection of songs from early albums and their latest, Communion.

It really sucked that the cops cut the show short.

Fun night nonetheless.  Huge thanks to Mats Holmberg for inviting me!!

Gustaf Spetz – “You and Me”

By Roni Brunn | March 16, 2009 | Music downloads, News

gustafspetzpress3“You and Me” is a wonderful twee single from Gustaf Spetz, who previously put out music as the lead singer of Eskju Divine.  The music is described as a drug-fueled Elton John with further indulgences in the Beach Boys and Beatles, and that’s an apt introduction to Gustaf’s upbeat, catchy songs sparkling with Pa-Pa-Pa’s and bright pianos.  His album debut album Goodnight Mr. Spetz is now out on Swedish (of course) label Imperial Recordings.

Nancy – “Keep Cooler”

By Roni Brunn | March 12, 2009 | Music downloads, News

Brazilian music may have conjured Bossa nova till the electro of CSS and Twelve came around – that was a radical departure!  Now Nancy shows us there’s no reason to assume the diversity ends there.

Their sexy, catchy music conjures K’s Choice mellowed by the atmosphere of late nights at Parisian bistros.  (In reality, the band spend time in London, Rio, and places in Uruguay).  They should be amazing live, and I highly recommend checking them out on their US tour this March.  It includes dates at SXSW, naturally.

Ikea Solar Powered Lights

By Roni Brunn | March 11, 2009 | News

solig-lightsWow, I think this is my first Ikea post! Skol to that!

For summer 09, the Swedish budget design retailer features a range of solar powered lights.  It’s such a good, simple, obvious idea to use the summer sun around the clock. Even if the lights aren’t made well enough to last a few summers, disposable consumption with solar power beats disposable consumption with battery waste.

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – “I Am Goodbye”

By Roni Brunn | March 10, 2009 | Music downloads, News

The latest video from Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy stokes the anticipation for his upcoming album Beware, which comes out March 17 on Drag City.  Directed by (my friend) Jennifer Parsons & Leif Johnson, the video follows Will Oldham on a stroll through Echo Park.  The shoot was really basic — it lasted just 45 minutes, and Will was singing along to a set of iPod Speakers.

Periodic Tables That Don’t Relate to Chemistry

By Roni Brunn | March 9, 2009 | News

Here’s a Photoshop shortcut guide designed as a periodic table:

It’s from a series of posters that cover the prominent apps in the Adobe creative suite.  Looks really cool, and it made me look around for more appropriations of the periodic table.  Since the periodic table is so iconic and easy to navigate, it’s inspired other uses besides the tabular display of chemical elements.

Daily Lagerfeld Quotes on Twitter

By Roni Brunn | March 8, 2009 | News

Karl Lagerfeld’s one of my favorite designers and thinkers.  I loved Lagerfeld Confidential and follow his coverage for both the aesthetics and the wit.  Actually, wit is just the surface – the content, the personality, and the fun of this cultural icon are really what make his words so compelling.

So I just set up a new Twitter profile that posts a Karl Lagerfeld quote every day.  It’s a tribute rather than an impersonation – the quotes are timeless rather than relevant to Karl’s current activities.  Which is to say they may be relevant to yours.

The idea came when I saw some fake Lagerfeld Twitter, and I realized that I’d want a steady stream of actual Lagerfeld quotes.  It’s a better fit for the subject anyway.  Karl wouldn’t want you to intrude on his alone time, and he doesn’t “”"discuss.”"”

Click here to check out @KLsaid.  I promise a daily Lagerfeld quote and nothing more (no spamming), nothing less (no flaking – I’m German myself and quite dependable).

Now the question is – who’s next?  Daily quotes from Yoda?  The GodfatherArrested Development?  Hipster Runoff?
