Adams Apple – “On the Horizon”

By Roni Brunn | April 7, 2009 | Music downloads, News

pre-bannerI love Britpop, and I love Swedish indie music.  When a Swedish indie band takes on Brit pop, I kinda go nuts.  Adams Apple was seemingly formed to make me crazy.  They sound like Hurricane #1, Cast*, and School of Fish.  To a less literal extent, their music takes cues from Oasis and The Verve.  Adams Apple layer the rock end of the psychedelic 60s influence on top of upbeat, confident pop.  Since they’re Swedish, you don’t have to worry about whether the melodies will be catchy.  The only drawback is not being to see them live any time soon.

The band’s new – it was formed in Stockholm in the fall of ’08 by Adam Borjesson, its songwriter/lead singer/guitarist.  Matilda Johansson shares vocal duties, and their instrumentation spans such Brit pop signfiers as fuzzed out guitars, a tambourine, and organs.  They’re now working on their debut album, slated for release in the summer or fall of ’09.

From what I can tell, they’re fun, ambitious, and amply high of cheekbone .  Perfect heirs to the Brit pop legacy.  Someone should be tipping Alan McGee.

* might be redundant to list both Hurricane #1 and Cast, but that debate is beyond the scope of this post.

New from My Darling YOU!

By Roni Brunn | April 3, 2009 | Music downloads, News

Sweden’s My Darling YOU! recently released 2 EPs – Saying things you don’t want to hear and A.K ART.  Their music reminds me of a less rockabilly, more straight ahead rock take on The Housemartins.  It’s really energetic and fun.

Coloring Books by Warhol and Disney

By Roni Brunn | April 2, 2009 | News

Andy Warhol’s illustrations were compiled into a coloring book:

warhold-coloring-book-orig-det

The 22 page book has funny titles composed by Warhol himself – Warhol began his career as a commercial illustrator.  He also put out his own illustration books, of which Shoes, Shoes, Shoes is probably best known.

In April, Prestel is putting out a new Warhol coloring book:

Maskinen – “Bränner”

By Roni Brunn | April 1, 2009 | Music downloads, News

Maskinen (The Machine) are a couple of Swedish MCs whose highly danceable music storms through electro backing with catchy, fast-paced riffs.  In this video, they perform “Alla Som Inte Dansar,” or “Those who Don’t Dance,” a song that postulates that those who don’t dance are rapists.   Contemplating these lyrics, a friend of mine concluded that an alleged rapist must be a non-dancer.  I think he was stretching the song’s logic.  The anecdote is funnier if you know the name of that specific alleged rapist and aren’t shocked by alleged rape humor.

The super good blog Discobellle included their track “Bränner” (“Burns”) in the latest Scion compilation, available here.
