Kate Moss – “Dirty Robot”

By Roni Brunn | May 15, 2009 | Music downloads, News

The Lemonheads forthcoming album, Varshons, is described on their site to “sounds like a mix tape slipped to you by a music-obsessed friend anxious to turn you on to something new.”  One such cover was premiered by Stereogum: Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye,” performed as a duet with Liv Tyler.  Varshons is out 6/23 on The End.

Kate Moss sings along with a speak-n-spell on this cover of Dutch duo Arling & Cameron‘s “Dirty Robot.”  The model/icon sang on Primal Scream’s “Some Velvet Morning” and of course on stage with her ex Pete Doherty.  Her sing talking sounds like a warmer, sexier version of the original “Dirty Robot.”  I like it a lot!  (okay, I must admit it’s possible I’m into it b/c it reminds me of From.)

Dieter Rams video profile

By Roni Brunn | May 13, 2009 | News

German designer Dieter Rams pretty much created the role of the modern creative director for a consumer goods brand.  His 1956 SK4 record player for Braun revolutionized the appearance of the phonograph; it was the first model to depart from the look of standardly “”"classic”"” wood furniture.  The collaboration with Braun completely transformed the electronics firm’s product range and brought formalist, minimal pieces that shaped modern design.  It’s no surprise that Apple’s Jonathan Ives cites Rams as his chief influence.

Floating Cloud Sofa Concept

By Roni Brunn | May 12, 2009 | News

magnetically-levitating-cloud-sofa

D.K. Wei’s Cloud sofa concept got honorable mention at Yanko Design’s RELAX contest.  The chrome base supports the floating cloud with a magnetic force, a catch-all natural phenomenon that’s used to mechanize many fanciful ideas, at least in theory.

Nervous Nellie – “June”

By Roni Brunn | May 11, 2009 | Music downloads, News

The best concepts give you something you didn’t know you needed, solve a problem you didn’t know you had, or bring you home in a place you didn’t know you should visit.  Nervous Nellie released what could be the indie country jam of the summer – and I’ll be the first to say I would not have made that request without first hearing their excellent “June.”  Now I don’t want to imagine a BBQ without it and its upbeat jangles.

I often claim that any genre will find its ultimate expression and craft in a Swedish band.  I’m not enough of an alt county connoisseur to claim Nervous Nellie its Swedish ambassador, but my enthusiasm for the band definitely brings me to the brink of such reckless declarations. Read more »

I sample things without permission” is Edwin Van Cleef’s Twitter bio.  Further research on his Twitter revealed that Van Cleef “used corporate finance this morning to summon a unicorn.”  Twitter is totally the future of journalism.

The Leeds UK DJ remixed Bat for Lashes’ “Daniel” as a nu Italo/blog house track, and it’s super good.  Enjoy!

Plugged pendant lamp by Muuto

By Roni Brunn | May 6, 2009 | News

muuto-plugged-pendant

Scandinaivian design house Muuto got its name from the Finnish word mootos, or new perspective.  The firm strives to offer good design that pushes individual expression, and the Plugged light exemplifies this ideal with its simple yet surprising twist.  Designers Brosberg & Ridderstråle sought to bring life into an otherwise static form, and they accomplished this missive by simple moving the endpoints of the power cord.

Heinz Ketchup Bottle Ad

By Roni Brunn | May 5, 2009 | News

heinz-bottle-ad

I read that advertisers are allowed to alter the look of food packaging but not the food itself.  Food packages are meticulously touched up, sure, but I always wondered why we don’t see more blatant manipulations.  I came across this cute Heinz ad that indicates how much the diner truly wanted ketchup with the bottle’s label mashed up letters, implying they were pushed down by repeated bottle shaking.  It was so cool to find out this ad was created in Tel Aviv, my home town!
