Madonna – “Celebrate (Oakenfold 12″ Dub)”

By Roni Brunn | July 18, 2009 | Music downloads, News

vuitton_madonna_ad3Madonna will release a new greatest hits album soon, and in it will be at least one new song.  Clips from what’s rumored to be the next Madonna single, “Celebrate,” have been circulating recently.  We have the first full length version of the track in this Paul Oakenfold remix:

Madonna – “Celebrate (Oakenfold 12″ Dub)”

It’s fine.  Any new Madonna is exciting, but this song doesn’t really have much going for it besides that attribution.  It’s catchy enough, and the remix is of course well done.  But it’s definitely not the song I’d remember from a night out.  Madonna’s still a fav, regardless!

Paul McCartney on Letterman

By Roni Brunn | July 16, 2009 | News

Last night, Paul visited Dave.  It was nice to see him back at the Ed Sullivan theater, though the interview was pretty banal. My favorite question was, “How was Ringo those days? Were you nice to him?”

Both parts of the interview and four songs below.  Check them out before they’re taken down, or go to the CBS YouTube page for high quality videos.

One – “Rainbowland”

By Roni Brunn | July 13, 2009 | Music downloads, News

oneI’ve been wanting to post my three fav new Swedish artists, but I only had two till I heard One‘s “Rainbowland.”  One is Carl Jirestedt, a songwriter/musician/producer from Gothenburg, Sweden.  He claims his influences to be “8-bit, theme-songs and 1-hit-wonders,” and his talent for melody means the catchy songs will start the fun within seconds of hitting play.  Fans of Le Sport (née Eurosport) will be very happy.

Neither purely dance nor truly indie pop, One sounds like music aimed at joy with a nod to the cynicism that breeds around it.  I relate.

One – “Rainbowland”

The single “Rainbowland” is out today (July 1) via Bonjour Recordings.

Don’t Miss the Marc

By Roni Brunn | July 8, 2009 | News

marc-school-1

Marc by Marc Jacobs is launching a capsule collection on August 1 with all items priced under $200.  So, yeah, it’s back to school already.  The Don’t Miss the Marc range includes casual staples like Ts and denim, spun even more loud and girly than typical Marc by Marc pieces.

Go get the mini skirts and illustrated Ts, then have a fun fall semester testing them out back on campus.  Should be lovely till midterms, right?   Sorry, hard for me to pretend back to school is good, and it def won’t be grand if you wear striped leggings.

Check out the rest of Marc’s options below.

Familjen vs Lis Sørensen – “Mine Øjne De Skal Se”

By Roni Brunn | July 7, 2009 | News

Sweden’s Familjen takes on the Danish 80s pop song “Mine Øjne De Skal Se” by Lis Sørensen.  I don’t know the original, but this track is one of my favs from Familjen.

Jeff Koons at the Serpentine Gallery

By Roni Brunn | July 6, 2009 | News

jeff-koons-001

From now till September, London’s Serpentine Gallery presents the first solo Jeff Koons show in the UK.  Koons’ work combines pop art and surrealist conventions to explore consumerism, sexuality, banality, and maybe childhood (well, people say it explores childhood, but I think that’s too superficial a reference – maybe “exhuberence and impulsiveness” would work better).

This show features works from Koons’ Popeye series, featuring inflatable toys cast in aluminum, readymade objects, and photo collages.  Seeing images of the pieces adds another level to the surrealism: it’s sometimes hard to tell apart photos of the sculptures from images of the sculptures used within photo collages.

Biker Boy – “Where do you go to (my Lovely)?”

By Roni Brunn | July 3, 2009 | Music downloads, News

This Peter Sastedt song drops a Balmain reference casually, so the timing for a remake is right.  Then again, this song was featured on The Darjeeling Limited soundtrack in 2007, so that’s probably more of an instigation for this cover.  Sweden’s Biker Boy version sounds like Embassy hockney vocals over a Pet Shop Boys lush instrumental.  It’s a great track for drives on summer nights.  The video’s super good – it features beautiful vintage footage, sporadically choreographed for the music.

Serpentine Candlesticks

By Roni Brunn | July 2, 2009 | News

zimmerman-serpentine-candlesticksOoh, these are scary.  You’d think beheaded snakes wouldn’t look so menacing (to me), but replacing the venomous end with blazing flames doesn’t really alleviate the threat.  Plus the tails look like they’re mid-wiggle.  Bad news.

Wish I were kidding.
