Chandelier Creative x Partners & Spade – Gold Toy Soldiers

By Roni Brunn | June 15, 2010 | News

Design agency Chandelier Creative collaborates with Partners & Spade on this set of 24-karat gold toy soldiers.  The figures are made by hand, and each comes with a prop/accessory.  The set comes in a limited edition of 100 to commemorate Father’s Day 2010.

I love gold things that shouldn’t really be.  Toy soldiers specifically don’t provoke much nostalgia for me.  Never played with them – they’re too detailed for one.  I don’t think my brother was into them, either.  They don’t do anything, and you can’t make stuff out of them, unless you melt them together maybe.

Get it at Partners & Spade, 40 Great Jones Street, NY, 646-861-2827

The World Cup by Lanvin, Karl Lagerfeld, Versace, and Giambattista Valli

By Roni Brunn | June 9, 2010 | News

Soccer/world football is an important sport which culminates in the World Cup every four years.  2010 is a host year for this tournament, so people are especially excited about the game now.  Like most sports, soccer thrives on having teams compete for points.  In soccer, you get a point per goal.

Soccer bears another similarity to other team sports: it’s a game that outfits athletes in matching looks, kind of like the Dolce & Gabbana FW2010 black blazer finale but even more alike/uniform.

Dawn Ng – I Fly Like Paper Get High Like Planes

By Roni Brunn | June 3, 2010 | News

For her “I Fly Like Paper Get High Like Planes,” Dawn Ng installed thousands of paper planes to appear as though they’re bursting from a window.  Ng writes that the piece reflects her obsession with the notion of home; she spent eight years away from it.  I so get that – I’m a serial immigrant.  She’s consequently into the idea of nostalgia and its opposite, far-sickness.  Her text about this installation is smart and unpretentious [link].

Steven Meisel’s Vogue Italia June 2010 Cover vs. Steven Meisel’s Vuitton SS10 Ads

By Roni Brunn | June 2, 2010 | News

Vogue Italia’s June cover just made the rounds, and it features a Steven Meisel photo of Eva Herzigova in pre-fall Louis Vuitton, possibly reclining, definitely enmeshed in a pile of leaves.  At first glance, it looks kind of a similar to Meisel’s SS2010 campaign for Vuitton.  I guess the Vogue cover is more vivid because that’s how trees look in Italy in the fall – none of the warm, post-picnic greenery of the summer Vuitton scene.  It must be an important distinction because nobody wants to look like they’re running an ad on their June cover.

Bye Bye Bicycle – “Northpole”

By Roni Brunn | June 1, 2010 | Music downloads, News

I love Brit pop from Sweden.  Bye Bye Bicycle’s “Northpole” sounds somewhere between The Smiths and New Order – shit, I bet that would have been the most clichéd way to describe bands around that time had there been blogging then.  “Northpole” resides in the upbeat, catchy area of that overlap.  This single comes from their debut album Compass, out on Bonjour Recordings.
