Alexander Girard Dolls
Alexander Girard is easily one of my fav midcentury designers. His work brings together nature and whimsy in a clean, modern aesthetic, and I always wondered if he inspired the ride It’s a Small World in Disneyland — the façade at least. If you recall the Braniff International font, logo, & creative direction, you’re already familiar with his work.
House Industries has been selling Girard fonts, and Máximo has been selling his housewares. Now House sells a selection of Girard toys: a puzzle, blocks, a memory game, and dolls. (There’s also a nativity scene, but I dunno if that’s classified as a toy).
The dolls are based on designs originally handmade by Marilyn Neuhart, who sewed 100 of them for the 1961 opening of Girard’s Textile & Objects store. The Girard first received a Neuhart doll for Christmas by designer Ray Eames — ridiculously cool/sweet chain of events. The newly issued House Industries dolls are made with Mexican cotton from the same family-owned mill that Neuhart used for her originals.

Of course, I also love the custom 3D letters in Girard fonts at House:
But you already knew I’d be into that sort of thing.
