From: new inspiration from Gang Gang Dance

By Roni Brunn | October 25, 2008 | From, News

I’m working on my first album, Fair Isle.  All I listened to when I wrote the songs was Magical Mystery Tour.  Specifically, “I am the Walrus” and the intro to “Hello Goodbye.”

You only need about 30 seconds of this to get it:

Unfortunately, that’s not enough diversity for any sort of high level credibility.  But I’m still mixing the album, so there’s room for improvement!

What should I do to inspire this stage in the album making?

Reluctantly trendy band Gang Gang Dance told the NYTimes what they’re into:  “Ms. Bougatsos likes pygmy, Ethiopian and Bollywood music. Mr. DeGraw listens to Brian Eno’s album “Another Day on Earth” daily, and dub and reggae are band favorites.”

Those references definitely sound much more authentic than my suburban obsessions.  And they should — Gang Gang Dance are New Yorkers who “were really grossed out by a lot of the guys in leather jackets walking around Ludlow Street, and the aesthetic of the Strokes representing New York.”  Since I still think “Last Nite” is good, I must really need an overhaul of my influences!

First, let’s check out something Ethiopian:

Finally, some indie-sanctioned melisma! Take that, Mimi!

Is this “”"pygmy”"” enough? Is this indie past or future?  It sounds a lil like massage music.  Or maybe Thai yoga?  I’ll try to find the CD at Whole Foods.

Are there Bollywood DVDs at Whole Foods yet?  Blueray?  Who knew that place could feed my body and my soul — at first, I thought that was just hippie bullshit!

Lots to learn, for sure!
