Herzog & de Meuron – VitraHouse, Weil Am Rhein

By Roni Brunn | February 9, 2010 | News

Iconic design house Vitra has a new building on its campus in Weil Am Rhein, Germany: VitraHouse, designed by Herzog & de Meuron.  Seemingly made of stacked houses, VitraHouse will showcase the Vitra Home Collection when it opens in March.  The interior looks like an amazing place for the Vitra pieces; its spaces are divided by the unexpected collisions in forms.

The Vitra campus already boasts a Zaha Hadid fire station, a Frank Gehry design museum, and buildings by Nicholas Grimshaw, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza and Antonio Citterio as well as structures by Jean Prouvé and Richard Buckminster Fuller.  Vitra has been ambitiously rebuilding its campus after a severe fire in 1981 damaged its buildings and factories.  It’s out of control, like Disneyland for architecture fans who aren’t normally into Disneyland.
