LV’s Aviator vs. Givenchy’s Nightingale

Vuitton‘s Aviator bag comes from the label’s pre-fall 2010 collection. It’s a wool-based jacquard fabric trimmed in calfskin. It also may be the first Vuitton to take a direct cue from a contemporary Givenchy style – the blockbuster Nightingale satchel, first introduced in ’06.
Trends have steering power. They don’t just go up and down: high end to street or street to couture. They can take sideways turns from one label to another in the same market. I guess the Nightingale microtrend is a great navigator because it went from the minimal, tough chic at Givenchy to a preppy, branded look at Vuitton.
Maybe it’s kind of a compliment to Givenchy, which has been on the rise in the last few years under Riccardo Tisci. Now LV elevated Givenchy’s influence to the highest echelon of leadership in the luxury leather goods market, almost like adding another rung to the ladder, since Givenchy was already up there.
I wonder if we’ll see a duty free shop version of the Givenchy Melancholia:
