M&M’s Pretzel

By Roni Brunn | June 25, 2010 | News

Had these yesterday.  They were delicious.  When I was looking for a big image of the bag, I came across some sites that talk about the brand mythology of this candy/chocolate hybrid.

The idea is that the M&M candies are based on characters.  Each color is a different spokescandy with a particular personality.  At one point, the orange M&M ate a pretzel (see bag for X-ray evidence).  Word got back to the factory, and now we have a new variety of M&M’s.  They are delicious.

We can learn that it’s cool to let spokescandy eat other snacks, despite the obvious gross factor, both with the allusion to cannibalism and the job demands of spokescandy-ing.

I wonder if M&M’s would be better or worse off if they hired a proper cartoon spokesperson.  Like if Mickey got behind M&Ms.  Might be a cleaner way to go because it wouldn’t encourage kids to eat facsimiles of a beloved cartoon; they’d be encouraged to eat a beloved cartoon’s favored snack.  That way, they wouldn’t wanna eat things that are shaped like characters that entertain them.  They’d wanna eat things that look like food.

One time, my mom made me a birthday cake in the shape of my fave teddy bear.  I was into it, but now it seems weird that we cut up my bear and ate it.

The M&M’s Pretzel are delicious.
