Play with Karl
Back in 07, K Karl Lagerfeld put out a tank top bearing his likeness. In 08, he reprised the motif on a T-shirt sold to benefit Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund. People kinda took him seriously and designed lots of other items with Lagerfeld images.
So he got sick of himself in a manner only Karl could, and one result of this ennui is a stream of humorous Lagerfeld items. We start with the SS09 Karl Lagerfeld mask bag:
A few months after that runway show, the Karl Lagerfeld edition Steiff teddy bear was announced. The bear was designed by Lagerfeld himself and is dressed in a slim suit and starched white shirt like his namesake.
Next, Lagerfeld styled Barbie. For the doll’s 50th, Lagerfeld created a set of images of Barbie dressed in his clothes, paired with a model standing in for Ken. All excellent developments for the world of design – I support Karl fusing hilarity with amazing design across more and more media.
Making Lagerfeld play things is no longer solely the pursuit Karl himself. Mattel designed a doll with Lagerfeld’s likeness, too. The unique plastic Karl debuted at the Barbie event at the Colette shop in Paris:
How do you tell them apart? Real Karl uses special Japanese powder to maintain his hair’s particular shade of cloud white, while plastic Karl has game show host hair.
As for me, I made a Twitter profile in Karl’s likeness, so I’m in the game, too. To think I used to idolize this man when I was 12. I’ve come not far at all.
