Turkey’s Gürsan Ergil designs with the environment in mind, and his is a vision that incorporates natural rawness with a light hand in taming it.  I love the roughness of the reclaimed wood in his pieces because they look like nature’s versions of mid century classics, see the above lounge chair’s resemblance to the white molded La Chaise by Eames.

I think luxury’s true expression is in high level interaction with natural materials – e.g., wool or wood designed and executed with intelligent refinement.  We need design/culture to help us deal with our environment, so it reflects better on us if we do it with some wit and grace.  Or at least that’s what I tell myself when I get my hair blonded.

Gürsan Ergil first studied electrical engineering, and then he got into landscape design, history and preservation at Harvard, where he is now a lecturer on Islamic gardens.  Love it.  There has to be a good story there.
