SS11 Emerging Trend: Disheveled Neon

Proenza Schouler‘s SS11 show is one of the season’s best so far. The duo showed a fresh take on classic sportswear – already tough to pull off compellingly – by easing the cuts and rendering them out of light Japanese materials. They punched up the palette with neons, which play back to their earlier work nicely.
Then in London, Christopher Kane and Giles both worked similar ideas: neon touches on relaxed classic silhouettes.

In ladylike mode, this trend emerges as shifts and skirt suits.

Preppy looks include sweater vests and T-shirt dresses.
Disheveled neon makes sense for this spring. Preppy’s due for an update, and the ladylike elements kind of evolve the mid century mircotrend from FW10. I thought we already saw the end of neon – maybe this neon strand doesn’t have much to do with 80s revivalism. Maybe 80s revivalism succeeded in embedding itself into everyday life to the point that neon is just an axiomatically legit choice.
Very curious to see if/how Milan and Paris take this on.
