Stephen J. Shanabrook x Comme des Garçons SHIRT

By Roni Brunn | February 4, 2010 | News

Artist Stephen J. Shanabrook created the spring summer ad for Comme des Carçons SHIRT collection.  It’s an image that borrows from his series “Paper Surgery,” in which Shanabrook transforms fashion images by folding photographs. The series, a collaboration with Veronika Georgieva, features pieces like these:

It’s always good to give people a way to consume something they say they hate.  In this case, Shanabrook gives people legit access to glossy imagery that you wouldn’t bring up at a competitive party.  Normally, you can’t really talk about fashion photography or glamor and maintain the respect of educated people.  But if you put it in a context in which said images are getting fucked up, it’s totally fine.

In the opposite direction, it’s tricky to talk about art and not sound douchey.  Shanabrook deals with a frivolous subject here, so he seems like a safe artist to bring up.  (Obviously you shouldn’t talk about canonized artists with people who don’t already love you).

The spring summer 2010 SHIRT collection consists of T-shirts, jackets, shorts, and hats printed with road sign-inspired graphics.  Love the ad but can’t find it in me to go along with clothes like these:
