The World Cup by Lanvin, Karl Lagerfeld, Versace, and Giambattista Valli

By Roni Brunn | June 9, 2010 | News

Soccer/world football is an important sport which culminates in the World Cup every four years.  2010 is a host year for this tournament, so people are especially excited about the game now.  Like most sports, soccer thrives on having teams compete for points.  In soccer, you get a point per goal.

Soccer bears another similarity to other team sports: it’s a game that outfits athletes in matching looks, kind of like the Dolce & Gabbana FW2010 black blazer finale but even more alike/uniform.

German stylist, editor, and writer Markus Ebner commissioned World Cup jerseys from some leading designers for his fashion x soccer publication SEPPKarl Lagerfeld contributed a sketch of himself as a footballer.  He mixed in his signature white button down + black tie to a jersey that’s pretty similar to Germany’s 2010 World Cup jersey.

Alber Elbaz took some liberties with France’s jersey for the beautiful Lanvin counterpart:

The Versace jersey is not Donatella’s first.  She’s into Inter Milan and makes a jersey for every issue of SEPP.  Her jersey for the World Cup also incorporates her favorite team’s gold:

Not sure that the World Cup typically gets that geographically specific about teams.  Each country gets at most one team, and cities aren’t that relevant.  I don’t know what happens to city states in this tournament.  Hope people will be proud of Donatella for carrying the torch of local clubs all the way to the biggest soccer event this decade has so far seen.

Germany must be really hot this year because the Giambattista Valli jersey also looks like the country’s 2010 jersey:

I’m proud of fashion, Germany, and fitness.
