top 10 album covers for 2008

By Roni Brunn | December 18, 2008 | News

  • 10. The Raveonettes – Lust Lust Lust

Purely text artwork can come across as easy or perhaps barely glorified single artwork, but the energetic transposition of the title actually complements its name with wit.

  • 9. Nada Surf – Lucky

Though stark, this photo is very emotionally evocative. The photo could very well have been the basis for a cloying composition if it were not for the unassuming and slightly off balance text.

  • 8. Ra Ra Riot – The Rhumb Line

Both the central image and the top title bar remind me of 50s jazz album art.  I love this type of cover, and the execution is great: controlled, muted pallette, clean graphics, effortless type design.

  • 7. Deathcab for Cutie – Narrow Stairs

At first glance, this appears to be another album art in the vein of 50s jazz album art. But the collage is more involved, and the text treatment suggests an updated look.  The result is more customized than a faithful tribute.

  • 6. Gnarls Barkley – The Odd Couple

This cover sums up a lot of the visual signatures running around circa 2008: simplified color fields shaped almost like video game elements, tall, bold text, candy colors, and mechanical, perfect gradation.  It’s almost a web design comp.  At the same time, the cover doesn’t look gimmicky since each element has a rational, and the composition is thought out.  Doesn’t hurt that the result is happy and friendly.

  • 5. The Walkmen – You & Me

This composition makes simplicity look easy.  Cropped to suggest more than to reveal, the cinematic photo engages with the text very deliberately without looking too designed.  The font looks almost basic, and the italicized e’s look natural.  Very subtle, polished design.

  • 4. Girl Talk – Feed the Animals

This beautifully lit photo not only depicts a vandalism prank, it also innovates with the method of integrating text into the art. Fun and memorable.

  • 3. Sigur Rós – Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust

I love the hazy, overexposed quaility of the photo, and the subject is of course pure joy, fun, and mischief.

  • 2. Justin Adams – Soul Science

This collage would be engaging hung on a gallery’s stark white wall, and it’s equally compelling as album art. It’d be my favorite if the title weren’t superimposed like a second thought.

  • 1. Kanye West – 808s & Heartbreak

Bright warm red against dove grey, graphic minimalism, subtly designed font, and a witty concept – I love this cover.
