Valentina Glez Wohlers – Prickly Chair

By Roni Brunn | January 15, 2010 | News

Mexican designer Valentina Glez Wohlers created a chair that juxtaposes traditional European and Mexican icons: the Rococo chair and the cactus.  The concept of combining two stereotypes is already funny, and the absurd execution takes full advantage of the premise.  Doesn’t look like you can sit on this chair – its buttons sprout thorns!

To me, it’s a multiculturalism statement that really hits home.  Sometimes combining two worlds, even with good editing/direction, ends up useless.  Say you’re tired.  You wanna sit, but all you have is some complicated abstraction of a chair because that’s how your diversified mind furnished your living room.  You’re not gonna get rest.

I love this chair, of course.  It’d be amazing in a fashion shoot.
