Vuitton and Sprouse together again

By Roni Brunn | December 1, 2008 | News

The 2001 collaboration between Marc Jacobs at LV and artist/designer Stephen Sprouse ushered an era of irreverent exuberance for the Paris luggage house.  Sprouse’s graffiti prints and bright colors influenced much of the early 80s aesthetic, itself influential today.

Here’s Marc with a bag from the upcoming line:

Sprouse is the subject of a NY retrospective and a new book, both coming out in early 09.  Deitch Projects, which put together the retorspective, approached  Jacobs about participating.

“I tried to take what Stephen had done at Vuitton and then kind of flip it in my head, and make it Vuitton’s work for Stephen, not Stephen’s work for Vuitton,” Jacobs said. “I just felt it was a funny way to play with it, to pretend to be Sprouse for a bit, and use the work that he did, and then bring it back to the work that he did before I collaborated with him.”

The limited edition range will be available at LV stores starting Jan 9.  A dedicated site will be launched soon – Dec 15, at welovesprouse.com.
